I started writing Love you Mum when my youngest son as a new baby was fighting meningitis. My eldest son was unhappy and confused that his Mum was spending all her time in hospital, away from him, with his new screaming baby brother. My husband and I spent round the clock shifts at his bedside. The house still had to be managed, money still had to be earned, and we all had to eat, wear clean clothes and continue to function. I felt as close as I have ever come to not being able to cope with the pressures motherhood was bringing me.

Through those dark days I met and talked with Mums who had spent their children’s entire lives, some until the day their baby’s lost their battle for life, in the high dependency unit. These Mums no different to you or me, found the strength every day, to support, love and encourage their dying children. They showed me that mental resilience and inner strength come with motherhood. Those different women for whom all they had in common was having children, showed me that the untapped strengths that we all have as Mums are awesome and universal.

The capacity that we all have to protect, nurture and keep our children safe is infinite. What does not seem so strong is the drive to do the same for ourselves.

What seemed insane to me therefore, was why so many of those Mums, at the hospital and that I knew and worked with felt inadequate?

They thought they were underachieving, they lacked confidence and lived under an illusion of what success should look like, whilst fighting
inner demons of self doubt and impending failure? Including me!

My work to that point, in different capacities was about supporting and leading executives to achieve their personal potential. To find their
strengths, lessen their inner worries and build their mental capacity for success. It was then I knew I wanted to share all of the techniques I
built for senior executives and leaders with Mums.

Love you Mum is that work.

  • The book is a journey to find more understanding, clarity and acceptance of our many roles as Mums.
  • It shares experiences and exercises to create a goal centred focus, satisfaction and ultimately, peace of mind with our lives as either working or full time Mums.
  • It will increase your inner acceptance, and your personal resilience
  • It will give you the confidence to set goals and design the life you want to live

It shares experiences from women who hold senior executive roles to single working Mums on a minimum wage, plus a spectrum of full time Mums. Together we shatter all myths of Mummy perfection, yummy mummies and super woman, and show that for each and every Mum being at peace with who we are, and knowing who we are aiming to be is success enough.

Its aim is to allow you to switch off, at least most of the time; the self doubt, guilt, inadequacy and the need to be more than you are.

To bring you coping strategies you can use at the worst of times and the peace of mind to embrace the joys of being a Mum at the best of  times.
